The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1910) is the earliest surviving film version of L. Frank Baum’s 1900 novel, made by the Selig Polyscope Company without Baum’s direct input. It was created to fulfill a contractual obligation associated with Baum’s personal bankruptcy caused by The Fairylogue and Radio-Plays, from which it was once thought to have been derived. It was partly based on the 1902 stage musical, though much of the film deals with the Wicked Witch of the West, who does not appear in the musical. I had no idea that this film goes as far back as 1910!! How about you? It’s something else!!! LOL 😀

  19. This is so friggin scary thinking about how long ago this was filmed.. wow

  20. I guess this version retained a lot of the aspects of the musical “The Wizard of Oz.” Certainly Momba the Witch and the Girl Soldiers ended up in the first sequel book “The Marvelous Land of Oz.” As for all those “animals-played-by-people,” you must remember this was the era of “Peter Pan” the stage play, where the character of “Nana” – a St. Bernard dog played by a human – proved quite popular. “Imogene,” the calf in the original musical “The Wizard of Oz,” is an obvious example.

  21. hi im in the middle of makeing a website for the wizard of oz i will post a comment when its done by none

  22. you’e right–I found that out just a few days ago…oops. there may have been a wicked witch in Baum’s first script, before it was rewritten into the mishmash it became. At any rate, this film was released 2 years beofre the introduction of Mombi in the novel “The Marvelous Land of Oz”.

  23. Rather loosely based, actually; there wasn’t a Wicked Witch of the West (of any name) in the 1902 musical.

  24. That’s Bebe Daniels, who went on to a very prolific film career. The 1915 Alice was Viola Savoy.
